On a background of crimson color known as gPompeian red,h this fragment shows the god of erotic love Cupid (Eros in Greek mythology) in flight and holding what appears to be a garland of flowers. The image was probably crafted as a feature at the center of a large section of a fresco. The technique of making small images of flying or floating human figures against a plain ground is identified as typical of the Third and Fourth Styles of Pompeian mural painting (ca. 20 B.C. to A.D. 79).
