Serizawa's luminous patterns
contain scenes of nature that express the luminance of gentle breezes,
sunlight, fast-growing vegetation, and insects. His coloration resembles the
bright hues of the oceans, mountains, and rivers. The simple truth of the
Zen phrase, "The flowers are crimson, the willows are green," appears to be
the allure of aka-e. While Serizawa offers a rich variety of designs, each
and every one will touch your heart. This is because of his firm conviction
in this phrase. "If I think of aka-e, a design always manifests itself." Serizawa was said to have often talked about wanting to go on a pilgrimage. He is even said to have chosen the outfit he would wear on such a journey. "From Okinawa to Kyushu, Osaka, and Tokyo, along the way, why not lay out a straw mat on the ground and go about selling aka-e ceramic wares?" |

The work, Eighty-seven Year-Old Man, depicts Serizawa in an
indigo kimono, with an oi (four-legged wooden box used as a backpack by
Buddhist mountain ascetics) on his back, and a walking stick in one hand and
a flag declaring his pilgrimage in the other, accompanied by his family,
students, and cats. "Eighty-seven year-old man goes on a walking tour-having
been charged with ten great disciples-now at the last hurdle." Perhaps in
the clear gaze of this aged master, small flowering plants and people's
feelings here and there along the dusty highway appeared as aka-e
motifs. |
