Approximately seventy gilt bronze and stone buddhas from Boxing, ―the home of the Standing Bodhisattva, as well as from other regions in Shandong Province, such as Qingzhou and Zhucheng, will be on display with the full support of the Cultural Bureau of Shandong Province and the Shandong Provincial Museum. Many of the gilt bronze statues include signed or inscribed works, and many of the stone statues are renowned examples representative of a given dynasty.

Explore an overview of sculptures from Shandong Province dating from the period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties (386589) to Sui dynasty (589-618) and enjoy MIHO MUSEUM’s unusual bodhisattvas, which has a cicada on the front of his crown. Bodhisattvas with such decorated crowns appear to have been created from a fusion between early Buddhist and Chinese thought, though why and how this came to be continue to be shrouded in mystery.
