Autumn Season

Autumn comes quickly to the highlands of Shigaraki. As the summer heat li fts and calmness settles on the mountains, the Miho Museum's galleries take on the air of autumn. While leaving intact the display of last autumn's South Wing exhibition, new works that have never been seen in the museum will be gradually added and by the time the First Anniversary Exhibition opens on November 3, an even greater abundance of artistic beauty will be on display (for details, see p4, 5). In the North Wing, in addition to the Japanese collection, an exhibition space for Korean art is scheduled to stand from November 3 alongside those of the other magnificent civilizations, Ancient Egypt, West Asia, Greece /Rome, South Asia, and China (for details, see p.6, 7). Is it better to follow a path through the exhibition galleries that leads from the western civilizations to the eastern or from eastern to western? Either way, the unfolding story of civilization that you find will be deep and wide. The creative powers of the human race are boundless and energetic.
During our autumn season, the museum is open until 8:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Enjoy a night at the Miho Museum. You will never forget the brightness of the moon as seen from the Shigaraki Mountains.

The First Anniversary Exhibition
•November 3 through December 15
The first opening exhibition, which was held last November, was so success fully received that it will have an encore. In addition to the Emmaten painting, an Important Cultural Asset that will only be shown between November 3 and 8, a number of other notable treasures from the Miho Museum collection will be on display. On November 2, a pre-opening festival will be held. Our guests will be treated to the French court music of the Ensemble Philidor.
A year after our memorable grand opening, each member of our staff has exp ressed his or her joy at the positive reception the museum has received both within Japan and internationally. We appreciate your warm support for the museum and hope that you will continue to visit us far into the future.

The Kunsthistorisches museum in Vienna, one of the most eminent museums in the world, houses the collections of successive Hapsburg monarchs who ruled Spain and the Netherlands, and controlled much of Europe during their 640 year dynasty. It took twenty years to construct the museum complex, which was first opened in 1891.
The collection is a distinctive combination of sculptures and industrial a rts, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, antique musical instruments, and ancient art from Egypt, Greece, and Rome.
King Willem I established the Netherlands's National Museum of Antiquities in the university town of Leiden in 1818. The museum houses a collection of over 23,000 works of art from Egypt, West Asia, Greece, and Rome. At present, the museum is being refurbished and the Miho Museum collection has been chosen to celebrate the reopening of the facility. These two exhibitions will mark the first showings of the Miho Museum's collection in Europe.
