The Radiant Last Years: Works from the Age of Sha-in In An’ei 7 (1778), when Buson turned sixty-three, he began to primarily use the art name Sha-in. Masterworks such as Pavilion at Night (no. 4), Mount Fuji and Pines (no. 1), and Dew on the Summit of Mount Emei (no. 5) were painted during this period. Landscape Screens, which will be displayed for the first time in this exhibition, is one of Buson’s last paintings. It has the signature Sha-in and an inscription dating it to Tenmei 2 (1782), the year before his death. Compared to other works with the Sha-in signature, this screen is filled such strength making it unlike any of the others from the same period. Perhaps it conveys that Buson, who was approaching seventy, was still full of energy well into his old age. |
