Who Jakuchū studied painting under is
unclear. He appears, however, to have learned from the Kanō school
like many of his contemporaries. He must have practiced from
copybooks. After having mastered some techniques, he perhaps grew
dissatisfied with merely copybooks and began reproducing Chinese and
Korean works owned by nearby temples. While studying techniques from
works of the Kanō school and the classics, Jakuchū created his own
unique painting style. |
