Buddhism in the Heian period (794–1185) was esteemed for its role in protecting the state and for its powers in granting people’s wishes. Enmaten (Skt., Yama), king of the underworld, is said to receive such prayers. This work was painted as the central image for rituals to pray for long life, good health, and protection against sickness. |

Turtle-shaped Incense Burner
China, Han dynasty, 3rd c. B.C.–3rd c. A.D. From ancient times, it is said that turtles grow hair after a thousand
year and become sacred turtles after five thousand years. These sacred
turtles are depicted about the size of one’s fist and appear golden with
extremely long nails. The incense burner here is fist sized and recalls
a sacred turtle. |
