Lacquer ware from the Miho Museum Collection

Flat quiver phoenix and Hosoge Floral motifs
12th century

As evident by the use of the word "Japan" when referring to Lacquer ware, the art of lacquer has long been known throughout the world as the quintessence of Japanese arts and crafts.
The Maki-e technique dates from the Nara Period in the 8th century AD and is the foundation of a tradition that eventually developed into something uniquely Japanese. Of the mother-of-pearl works, "Flat Quiver with Phoenix and Hosoge Floral Motifs", designated an Important Cultural Property, is especially noteworthy. The glimmering rainbows of light that radiates from this work enchants viewers, whether they are from the East or West. This outstanding work affords us a glimpse of the imperial court culture that blossomed so splendidly during the Late Heian Period in the 12th century AD. Among the treasures of the "Shoso-in", which were governmental and temple store-houses, are many examples of the Tang dynasty decorative method of inlaying mother-of-pearl in flower motifs on red sandalwood.
