Summer Special Exhibition 2010
Dynamic Decoration in ASIA

Saturday, July 10 to Sunday, August 15, 2010
(*Selected works will be rotated during the exhibition.)

Why have humans come to create such beautiful things? When looking at the beautiful forms scattered across Asia, such questions come to mind. The spiritual practices, such as religious rituals and ceremonies, that people performed since ancient times involved many decorative elements (kazari). Sacred vessels adorned with symbols of superhuman power are one such example. Ornaments and ornamentation were also sources of enjoyment at court and at religious festivals, in which the masses attended in costume, adding color to the pageantry. Such customs radiate a distinctive color depending on country and people. Therein lies the various feelings of happiness and sadness, gratitude and fear towards nature, the sacred, and those who adorn these decorative ornaments. These sentiments simply yet dynamically give “form” to and express “kazari.” When we can appreciate the simple, beautiful prayers that give decorativeness form, we can unexpectedly be deeply moved and feel “beauty.”

This exhibition focuses on the MIHO Collection, which vividly draws out the distinctive colors of decorative elements filled with the life of Asia from its regions and ethnicities. We hope that this opportunity will shed new light on not only the amazing regions of Asia, but on the world, which has been adorned with fascinating decorations.
