Autumn Special Exhibition
Ode to Ancient Pottery:
The Six Old Kiln Sites of Medieval Ceramics and Their Vicinity

Saturday, September 4 to Sunday, December 12, 2010
Organized by MIHO MUSEUM and Kyoto Shimbun Co., Ltd.

“Strength and simplicity” are major reasons for the appeal of medieval earthenware. The six cherished Japanese pottery known by their early kiln sites include the stunning Tokoname and Echizen, the rustic Tanba, the hearty Shigaraki, the solid Bizen, and the only glazed earthenware from this early period, the elegant Seto. These ceramic wares have captured the hearts of many.

This exhibition presents approximately 150 pieces featuring outstanding works from the Six Old Japanese Kilns as well as pieces produced in their vicinity. The research and results of the latest excavations as well as an overview of medieval Japanese ceramics will also be featured in the first major exhibition to highlight medieval Japanese ceramics in thirty years.
