“The Land of Prayer: Buddhist Sculpture in Ōmi from Early to Medieval Times” at The Museum of Modern Art, Shiga, features Buddhist and Shinto statues from the Heian (794–1185) to Kamakura (1185–1333) periods. “The Hiyoshi Deity and Matsuri : The Commingling of Gods and Humans” at the Ōtsu City Museum of History unfolds the history of Hiyoshi Shrine, which has been revered as home to the guardians of the Tendai center of Enryaku-ji Temple, and presents works related to the Sannō Festival of the Edo period (1615–1868). (Works will be rotated in the respective venues during the exhibition.)
