MIHO’s Merciful Mother Kannon and Lotus Miroku:
Two Tapestries

Saturday, July 19 to Sunday, August 17, 2014

Organized by MIHO MUSEUM and Kyoto Shimbun Co., Ltd.
MIHO MUSEUM has two modern masterworks of tapestry in its custody. One is Merciful Mother Kannon, which is a delicate tapestry reproduction of Hibo Kannon (Compassionate Mother Kannon) by Kano Hōgai (1828–1888) in the collection of the Tokyo University of the Arts. Intricately incorporating threads in 4500 colors, this work splendidly recreates the mystical and profound spatial expression as well as the impressive and dignified presence of Kannon (Skt. Avalokiteśvara) that was originally realized by Hōgai. The other tapestry, which was completed at the end of 2012, is a reproduction of a mural painting on wall no. 2 in the main hall (kondō) of Hōryū-ji Temple—Miroku (Skt. Maitreya) holding a lotus and sitting with one leg pedant—that was destroyed in a fire in 1949.
